Keeping the Spirit Alive- Halloween 2020

Nothing was going to stand in the way of keeping the spirit of Halloween alive at our Berwick sites this year. From pumpkin drive through displays, to “Thriller” dance videos, physically distanced cocktail parties, and so much more, Halloween was in full swing for 2020!

Every year our Berwick communities embrace the fun of Halloween as a chance to connect with the children in our neighbourhoods, normally welcoming hundreds of kids through the doors for festive fun and trick or treating. With Covid Safety restrictions in place, our Berwick Active Living teams got creative and found safe and unique ways to carry on some of these traditions.

Nothing says Halloween like preschoolers dressed as dinosaurs, princesses and lady bugs! Berwick on the Park opted to join their buddy preschool for a physically distanced, outside, trick or treat and costume parade. The Great Pumpkin Drive Through at Berwick House and Berwick Royal Oak allowed their local buddy schools to carve pumpkins, just like in previous years, and have them proudly displayed amongst a spectacular display of lights, goblins, witches, monsters and ghosts.  This year rather than walking through the displays in the back gardens, families enjoyed driving through the fronts of the buildings and remaining physically distanced in their cars. Over two hundred cars full of excited families enjoyed the displays over two nights. A highlight of these events were the residents volunteers, who came dressed in their witch hats and feather boas to shout “Happy Halloween” to all that attended. Berwick House resident volunteer, Sheila Taylor, said “I thoroughly enjoyed being out there and seeing the carloads of young people coming by. They all looked so happy”

The magic of Halloween certainly doesn’t end when you turn a certain age though! Check out the Berwick Qualicum Beach dance crew perform their Halloween addition of “Thriller”

The fun continued inside our Berwick walls with staff pumpkin carving contests, theme costumes and creative, tasty treats prepared by our culinary teams! Berwick Comox Valley served up the most “spooktacular” Candy Corn flavored cocktails to go along with trick or treat bags full of goodies at their Halloween cocktail party. Berwick by the Sea got crafty and made some festive Halloween candy dishes and enjoyed a special “Candy Apple” pop up station with one of their fantastic chefs!  Berwick Qualicum beach was lucky to have a resident family member who is a “Master” pumpkin carver, spend the afternoon in their courtyard creating a pumpkin masterpiece with power tools and all! They finished Halloween night off with a festive dinner, complete with “Witch finger” cookies for dessert.  Berwick on the Lake went all out with amazing floor to ceiling displays, some top notch staff and resident costumes and a full day of Halloween celebrations!

2020 has kept us on our toes but at the end of the day celebrations like Halloween have shown us how we can come together with our communities and make the most of anything that comes our way!  With the success of Halloween just behind us we are excited to find ways at our Berwick sites to create a holiday season that is fun, memorable and meaningful. Here is to rolling with 2020 and keeping the spirit alive!
